Breeding Season

Posted by Emily Gabbert on

Breeding season is well underway for us here at Grassy Meadows Goats.  We purchased a new buck this year and are very excited to see the kids he produces with our does.  We aim for early year kids because it is much easier with our schedule.  We also prefer the cold to the miserable heat for kidding.  The hot, damp weather is bad for coccidia infestation and the flies can be a real menace.  We seem to do well with the cold and haven't had any problems yet.  We do monitor our does very closely and make sure we know the dates they were bred so the guessing is down to a minimum.  When it's time for delivery we stay with the does and make sure the babies are not subjected to the bitter cold at birth.  We also use barn safe heat lamps and have had great success with them helping our kids to thrive in the cold.  The soap business slows down in January and February and we get a little break from the business of markets and holidays so it's a great time to focus on our goat herd.  I am anxious to see how our milk supply holds up this year.  We finished milking in August and have frozen many gallons in preparation for our soap making end of year busy schedule.  I can't wait to update everyone with pictures of our kids next year.  Thanks, Annette.
